To practice dental hygiene legally, the student must take and successfully pass a computer-based examination, the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination. This examination is administered to all dental hygiene students in the country. The student also must successfully complete a clinical examination and an examination on the dental laws of the desired state of licensure. After written and clinical examinations have been completed, the graduate may apply for licensure in any state.
