Undergraduate Certificate: Musical Theatre

Student Learning Outcomes

Students graduating from this program will:

  • Develop an individual approach to performing seamlessly between spoken word and song.
  • Apply musicianship and rehearsal skills in collaborative theatre contexts.
  • Execute musical theatre choreography through a blend of ballet, jazz, and modern dance forms.
  • Demonstrate stylistic and historical awareness in musical theatre interpretation.
  • Integrate vocal technique, music literacy, acting skills, and dance technique in live performance.

The Musical Theatre Certificate will offer students experiences in all three of the Divisions inside the Conservatory: Music, Dance, and Theatre. Drawing from the world-class talent of our faculty in each Division, this certificate will allow students from both in and out of the Conservatory to study musical theatre dance styles, enhance acting techniques, train their singing voices, and develop musical theatre scene work.

To be granted a certificate students must achieve a grade-point average of at least 2.0 in the 20-hour program described below. No credit will be given for courses in which the grade is below C-. This certificate may only be awarded in conjunction with a UMKC undergraduate degree.
